He worked as a University professor of English language and literature and wrote the books in his free time. J.R.R Tolkien was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II on 28 March 1972.

The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are the most popular books written by J.R.R Tolkien . After his death his son Christopher published The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales using the manuscripts left behind.
